Program 8: Education and Training
Program Overview
Activities in the Centres Education and Training Program are building on the strengths of the previous CRC in postgraduate research, with new features including:
- collaborative offering of a range of educational products, including processes such as action learning. We plan to combine with other water-related CRCs to provide course materials across the water spectrum
- material for a range of audiences and educational levels
- emphasis on a holistic or systems approach to catchment management.
PhD Program
The previous CRC's PhD program has been judged an outstanding success over the last 7 years, with joint supervision of students by CRC participants being a feature; this is continued in the current CRC. We are providing full scholarship support for 12 postgraduates, and top-up support to another 12 during the life of the CRC. Features of our PhD program include:
- placement with industry partners, or at the community level
- specialist courses in areas such as the management of change, conflict resolution, and resource allocation.
- holistic PhD projects, essential to address the complex relationships between issues that have caused the current problems.
More information about postgraduate courses and scholarships is available here.
Postgraduate Courses, Short Courses, and Seminars
An integrated suite of courses is being developed utilising a range of flexible delivery techniques to provide a variety of training and educational opportunities. Web-based delivery, CD-ROMS, intensive short courses, and interactive field activities are used. These courses target people at the operational level of catchment management with subjects offered by all member universities. Courses relevant to international markets are being developed. The CRC provides a coordinating role for the delivery of a number of industry-accredited courses, in conjunction with other CRCs.
Train the Trainer
Special emphasis is given to 'train the trainer' courses and educational activities in whole-of-catchment management, with special emphasis given to the adoption of systems approaches. The involvement of the researchers and stakeholders is crucial in developing the training modules to deliver the Centres research outcomes.
Undergraduate Courses
The CRC is developing guidelines for the introduction of a systems approach to catchment management into a range of undergraduate programs, and adopt this approach in its own activities.
Community Education
The introduction of a range of catchment issues is being facilitated through half-day to full-day short courses. Resource materials are planned to be developed for secondary schools, management agencies, and community groups on catchment behaviour and management.
