Research context and anticipated research outcomes

  • develop biofiltration systems capable of reliably treating stormwater to a standard fit for reuse, and to suit a range of climate and site conditions

The use of water resources in many parts of Australia is approaching the limits of sustainability. A focal point of proposed national water conservation programmes is the reuse of both wastewater and urban stormwater. Although the average annual volume of urban stormwater runoff in Australian cities is almost equal to the average annual urban water usage (of which at least 50% is for non-potable use) currently only 8% of rainwater is used. General stormwater, collected from paved urban surfaces such as car parks and roads, has been particularly neglected, despite its high potential for non-potable usage, and this is in part due to a paucity of technologies for reliable and affordable on-site treatment of stormwater runoff which would guarantee water quality fit for its intended use.
