Abstract / Summary:
Preface
Despite the considerable Government and private resources invested in the rehabilitation of damaged environments, little is known about the success of
such projects. The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Catchment Hydrology conducted a project (2000-2003) in collaboration with the CRC for
Freshwater Ecology and the Moreton Bay and Catchments Healthy Waterways Partnership to assess the impact of stream rehabilitation on a few key
elements of stream health.
The project aimed to quantify the affect of a commonly adopted stream rehabilitation strategy on a small stream in southeast Queensland. The stream
rehabilitation strategy was to exclude stock by fencing the stream, provide off-stream stock watering and to revegetate the riparian zone using endemic native
species for a 1.5km2 catchment (Echidna Creek) near Nambour in southeast Queensland. Four key elements were monitored through the life of the project:
1. Suspended sediment load;
2. Channel morphology;
3. Water temperature;
4. Aquatic macrophyte growth.
The results of the response of aquatic macrophyte growth to revegetation are presented in this report. The other key research areas are presented in separate
CRC for Catchment Hydrology technical reports.
